The Union Turnpike/Long Island Motor Parkway Pedestrian Underpass
My favorite co-author Al Velocci found a 1929 blueprint showing plans for a pedestrian underpass under the Motor Parkway and Union Turnpike. It turns out that I had two construction plans of the proposed underpass in my survey files.

The Expansion of Union Turnpike and the Relocation of the Motor Parkway East of Winchester Boulevard
In 1928, New York State decided to widen Union Turnpike to make it a major east-west road in Queens. However, the planned expanded Union Turnpike just east of Winchester Boulevard was blocked by the Motor Parkway.

Documenting W.C. Fields on the Long Island Motor Parkway in 1925
At Thursday's meeting of the Long Island Motor Parkway Preservation Society, people were fascinated by the post of the 1925 film "Sally of the Sawdust". As a follow-up to several requests, here is my documentation of where I believe D.W. Griffith filmed W.C. Fields on the Motor Parkway.

From the NYC Municipal Archives: Images from the Motor Parkway and the 1937 Vanderbilt Cup Race
Last month the New York City Municipal Archives released a database of over 870,000 photos from their collection of 2.2 million images of New York throughout the 20th century. I found seven photos related to the Long Island Motor Parkway and the Vanderbilt Cup Races.

Long Island Motor Parkway Bridge Series: #8 Alley Road Bridge (Winchester Boulevard) in Queens
When the 48 miles of the Motor Parkway were completed in 1926, a total of 65 bridges were built by William K. Vanderbilt Jr. and his associates over and under the parkway. Twelve of the bridges were built in Queens. Going west to east, the eighth bridge carried the Motor Parkway over Alley Road , now Winchester Boulevard. As seen in aerials and ground photos , it is one of the best documented bridges:

The Four-Lane Motor Parkway and an Aerial View of Queens in 1924
For the second VanderbiltCupRaces.com post of 2009, I have improved the format of my December 31st post and added a rare 1924 aerial view. The post includes amazing images from the Queens Borough President's Collection that shows two Long Island Motor Parkway bridges over Winchester Boulevard in Queens.
